<p style="text-align: justify;">El rector de la Universidad de Extremadura (UEx) ha sido elegido presidente de la Conferencia de Rectores de las Universidades Españolas (CRUE). Píriz releva en el cargo a Manuel López, rector de la Universidad de Zaragoza. El recién nombrado presidente presentó ante la Asamblea General su programa, bajo el título 'Avanzamos unidos', y desgranó las principales líneas que llevará a cabo durante su mandato al frente de CRUE Universidades Españolas.</p>\n
<p style="text-align: justify;">Entre otros aspectos, ha subrayado su intención de defender una mayor autonomía para las universidades, siempre ligada a la rendición de cuentas; una apuesta por la calidad en la formación de los universitarios, así como por la mejora de la comunicación tanto interna como externa de la institución, de cara a mejorar la imagen del conjunto del sistema universitario español.</p>\n
<p style="text-align: justify;">El equipo que acompañará durante los próximos dos años a Píriz son el rector de la Universidad de Lleida, Roberto Fernández, como vicepresidente primero; el rector de la Universidad de Comillas, Julio Luis Martínez, como vicepresidente segundo; mientras que los vocales son Esteban Morcillo, rector de la Universitat de València; Josep María Garrell i Guiu, rector de la Universitat Ramón Llull; Pilar Aranda, rectora de la Universidad de Granada; y Fernando Suárez, rector de la Universidad Rey Juan Carlos.</p>\n
<p style="text-align: justify;">Segundo Píriz (Villanueva del Fresno, Badajoz, 1963) cursó los estudios de Veterinaria en la Universidad de Córdoba, donde también se inició en la docencia e investigación. En el año 1986 se incorpora a la Universidad de Extremadura con un contrato de profesor asociado e inicia su andadura universitaria hasta lograr en el año 2000 una Cátedra de Universidad, del Área de Conocimiento de Sanidad Animal, en la Facultad de Veterinaria de la UEx.</p>\n
<p style="text-align: justify;">Ha participado en la gestión universitaria como miembro de distintas comisiones de docencia e investigación, secretario del Departamento de Medina y Sanidad Animal y, desde el año 2004 hasta el mes de julio de 2010 ha ocupado el puesto de Vicerrector de Coordinación y de Relaciones Institucionales.</p>\n
<p style="text-align: justify;">En su trayectoria en la UEx, Píriz ha compaginado su labor docente e investigadora. Es coautor del Manual de Microbiología Veterinaria (Ed. Interamericana-McGraw Hill. 2002), utilizado como texto habitual en las Facultades de Veterinaria Iberoamericanas y ha realizado distintas estancias en universidades y centros de investigación nacionales, así como en el Institüt für Medizinische Mikrobiologie (Suiza) y en el Department of Microbiology del Trinity College de Dublin (Irlanda).</p>\n
<p style="text-align: justify;">Asimismo, ha participado como investigador en 22 proyectos de Investigación. Fruto de este trabajo ha dado lugar a una patente para una vacuna veterinaria. Ha dirigido varias tesis doctorales y de licenciatura y ha desempeñado la tutela de varios estudiantes de postgrado.</p>\n
<p style="text-align: justify;">Tras ganar las elecciones celebradas el 1 de diciembre de 2010, tomó posesión como rector de la Universidad de Extremadura. En diciembre de 2014 fue reelegido en el puesto y hasta la fecha ha sido el presidente de la Comisión Sectorial CRUE TIC.</p>\n
